Cold sores on my face taking valtrex and putting abreva on it with this help? I want them to go away fast I have one on the side of my cheek, one in my nose, and one up by my eye.. I seriously hate it i've been to so many specialist and they've all said it was a fever blister... please tell me anything that will help heal them fast! Am I the only one that get's this anyone else?

Amanda S replied: "You can also try a topical cream that is a prescription anti-viral. Other than that you are doing what you should be doing. valtrex is good for severe fever blisters and so is abreva... but a RX ointment or cream could help dry them up better."

polarbearcub replied: "Use Noxcema cold medicated cream!"

I took Valtrex and used abreva..if my lip is still looking a little sore should i not? kiss my boyfriend? can i still pass the cold sore onto him?

Hibachi replied: "Lol you took valtrex for a cold sore wow."

dani may replied: "i get cold sores all the time, i have since i was a little girl.....and for the kid that laughed that you took valtrex, i do too because they spread so bad.....yes your boyfriend could probably get it if its broke open..and he wont necessarily get a cold sore but could contract the herpes simplex virus....i got the herpes simplex virus hereditary from my mom, i have been with my husband for 4 years and hes never gotten one, neither has my dad(from my mom) so its hard to say.....good luck cold sores suck!!!"

Lindsey replied: "i got cold sores from my boyrfriend, while it was healing i think. wait until its no longer sore and has healed. it may still be contagious at this state. i know it sucks to have to wait but be patient and wait until it heals, your boyfriend may thank u in the long run and keep using cold sore cream it will help it heal. valtrex is more for genital herpes so u don't really need to use that unless its really bad, just apply the cold sore cream as often as possible and use chap stick to keep your lips from drying out."

Will it help to use zovirax and abreva at the same time? is it ok. what does each do? I just took valtrex too. but the cold sore is already out. I can feel the blister all though it's not fully out. I have valtrex and abreva but i don't know which one to use. I felt the tingling at 2 am an its now 10 am.

gangadharan_nair replied: "Acyclovir cream is used to treat cold sores (fever blisters; blisters that are caused by a virus called herpes simplex) on the face or lips. Acyclovir ointment is used to treat first outbreaks of genital herpes (a herpes virus infection that causes sores to form around the genitals and rectum from time to time) and to treat certain types of sores caused by the herpes simplex virus in people with weak immune systems. Acyclovir is in a class of antiviral medications called synthetic nucleoside analogues. It works by stopping the spread of the herpes virus in the body. Acyclovir does not cure cold sores or genital herpes, does not prevent outbreaks of these conditions, and does not stop the spread of these conditions to other people. Docosanol, also known as behenyl alcohol, is a saturated fatty alcohol used mainly as an antiviral agent, specifically for treatment of "cold sores" caused by the herpes simplex virus. It is normally administered topically in a cream containing a base and a 10% mix of the active ingredient. Valacyclovir is used to treat herpes zoster (shingles) and genital herpes. It does not cure herpes infections but decreases pain and itching, helps sores to heal, and prevents new ones from forming. Please see the web pages for more details on Acyclovir (generic name) Zovirax (brand name), Docosanol (generic name) Abreva (brand name) and Valacyclovir (generic name) Valtrex (brand name). Consult your doctor or a pharmacologist."

How likely will Valtrex work for cold sores? I went to the dermatologist because I get those embarassing cold sores. He prescribed Valtrex, however, I'm hesitant to take a medication which I'm not familiar with. The side effects aren't that bad but I want this stuff to work. I tend to get cold sores on my lips about once every two months. Abreva is a joke. Will Valtrex work?

Senor Deppen replied: "try enzyte for that natural male enhancement"

h3liumaddict replied: "how herpes face life?"

muzza replied: "I get cold sores all the time too, and i haven't found anything that works except this: and its the best advice i can give you : Use that cold sore lip gloss with the menthol in it, i cant remember wat its called the name has worn off my lid but it has a yellow lid and its in a small screw top container use it on your lips every day and you wont get another one and this is because of the vick/menthol in it.. But if you do heres something that really works as soon as you feel any sign of one developing put vick on it (straight vick) straight away and it will stop it in it's tracks. P.s sorry i forgot the name but i wont be hard for you to find... Ill let you know tomorrow. Its called carmex"

I have chronic cold sores. Something that has worked for you? I have had outbreaks consistently for 6 months. I have tried two prescription anti-virals- Acyclovir and Valtrex. I use Abreva every day, and am also currently taking Super Lysine, extra vitamin C, a mushroom immune defense supplement and a mixture of immune boosting herbs. Does anyone have any advice? Perhaps something uncommon that worked for them?

fairycharisma replied: "The only thing I have ever used is L-Lysine, it was completely gone in 2 days...now I just take one when I feel one starting to form."

Tessa replied: "Ahhhh the dreaded cold sores. i have the same thing your not alone. But i use the over the counter abreva oral stuff or if i need somethin stronger i have perscription DENIVIR. Of course you have to get your doctor to perscribe it but its worth it. And once you learn tricks to get rid of cold sores fast it becomes easier to manage. O and if you feel one coming on theres a pill i cant remember the name but they all work great :) GOOD LUCK hope I helped!"

Does anyone else get really horrible cold sore out breaks? I get them so bad that they consume my mouth in blisters, they cannot be hidden with any makeup or stopped by abreva or any perscription cream. I am trying valtrex pills at the moment, I hope they work. I feel like I am the only one who gets them like this. They stop me from going to school and work, I missed an exam, and might miss the first two weeks of my new job. It is a true disability!

Debby R replied: "i get them to and i take valtrex also if they dont go a away ask your doc to uo the dose i take 2000mg"

pumpkinhead replied: "Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but multiple breakouts of bad cold sores basically means oral herpes. It doesn't have to come from sexual activity. Many people have it. See a dermatologist."

I have two hard bumps on my bottom lip for 6 months now? What could they be? Hello, When I first noticed these two bumps on my bottom lip I immediately went to the doctor and the doctor just looked at them and said it was herpes. He did not give me a test. He prescribed Valtrex, which I took the entire bottle, and they are still there. I bought Abreva from the store and every other lip therapy that you could possibly think of and they are still there. I even read that Lysine was good for herpes so I took that as well and six months later the bumps are still there. Any ideas, suggestions? I have also scheduled an appointment with my dentist but I wanted to get some feedback as well. Thank you!

rm0475 replied: "6 months is way to long for a herpes (cold sore) outbreak. Might be a cyst."

Terrence replied: "eeew"

Abreva vs. prescription medication? I have been using Abreva for a few years with excellent results, that is as long as I begin using it as soon as I feel the first tingle. If waiting a day or two to use it, I don't feel it works any better than any of the over the counter things that do nothing but relieve the pain. Do Zovirax or Valtrex work any better or faster in speeding up the healing once the blister erupts than Abreva does? I'm just wondering if it would be cost effective to even bother with the prescription if the effects are going to be the same and the duration 2-3 weeks?

mlgable replied: "Yes they work better as they attack the virus. You can also use tagamet when feel an outbreak coming on."

curly replied: "They work so much better."

Does taking Valtrex reduce the possibility of transmitting the HSV1 virus if I don't have an active sore? I just started getting cold sores about 6 months ago. Since then, I've started taking L-Lysine daily, and Valtrex when I feel an outbreak coming on (I'm also usually armed with Abreva, just in case I ever need it). I also stopped dating as soon as I got the diagnosis. I'm just starting to peek my head out from behind the curtain again, and would like to resume dating. But I am very worried about transmitting this virus to anyone. I am aware that there is a small possibility of me transmitting the virus to someone, even if I do not have an active sore (viral shedding), and I was wondering if taking Valtrex reduces the chances of transmission at all. I want to be able to go out & feel reasonably secure that if I meet a girl & hit it off, that I can proceed as normal, and kiss her if things go that way, without the lurking fear that I may have infected her. Does Valtrex work in this way? Will it make me less contagious? I do not currently have a sore (and haven't had one in a while).

Amber replied: "Valtrex does reduce the risk- and really all you have to be careful about doing- kissing or giving oral. Becuase you having HSV1 can transmit someone else into HSV 2 so just be careful."

kayshoizdashiit replied: "Yes valtrex prevents passing it on but with hsv1 you shouldn't be worrying at all because if you don't have a hsv sore at the time of kissing or oral sex you cannot pass it on only when an active sore is present but you are taking the right approach with the abreva and lysine you can also ask your doctor for a cream called zovirax it makes the sore go away quickly there are two kinds one for hsv1 and one for hsv2 so ask for the one for hsv1 to suit you plus you can take echinacea for help of your immune system its a herbal supplement also so yeah I hope I helped"
